International Private Jet Arrivals at Teterboro: Clearing Customs, From Wheels-Down to Your Car

4 min read

International private flights can land at Teterboro and clear U.S. Customs right on the field. There is no need to divert to JFK or Newark. But customs adds steps, and those steps decide when your passenger actually walks out to the car. Here is how it works, start to finish.

Teterboro is a customs airport

Teterboro is a designated landing rights airport. That means U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processes international private arrivals on site. CBP has run its inspection facilities at Hangar 1 and at the Jet Aviation FBO. Signature's East terminal also lists on-site customs and immigration with limited weekday hours.

The aircraft operator chooses the customs location when it arranges the arrival. That location may not be the FBO the aircraft parks at afterward. It matters for where your chauffeur waits.

Customs hours

Customs at Teterboro is generally staffed from about 7:30 AM to 11:30 PM local time. Arrivals outside those hours can sometimes be accommodated on request, but this is arranged by the operator with CBP in advance. A late transatlantic arrival should be confirmed with CBP well ahead.

The timeline, from departure abroad to your car

  1. Before departure abroad. The pilot files the passenger manifest and notice of arrival through CBP's eAPIS system. Under federal rules, CBP must receive it no later than 60 minutes before the aircraft leaves the foreign airport. It includes the tail number, the departure airport and the estimated arrival time.

  2. Permission to land. For Teterboro, the operator requests permission to land from CBP at least 2 hours before departing the foreign airport. The approval comes with a tolerance of about 30 minutes either side of the arrival time. If the arrival drifts outside that window, the crew must contact CBP again.

  3. Wheels-down. The aircraft taxis to the assigned customs location, not straight to the FBO.

  4. Processing. Passengers and crew are processed in the CBP facility with passports and visas. Baggage may be inspected. Food left over from the flight is handled as regulated waste.

  5. Release. Once cleared, passengers are free to leave. If the aircraft then repositions to another FBO, passengers usually exit from the customs location.

  6. The car. Your chauffeur meets the passenger at the exit point you confirmed, ready to load bags and go.

Preclearance: when an international flight lands like a domestic one

Some flights clear U.S. Customs before they leave. CBP has offered general aviation preclearance at Shannon, Ireland since 2010, and later in Aruba. A precleared flight flies point to point to its approved U.S. airport and arrives without a customs stop. If the aircraft has to divert, the preclearance may no longer count, and passengers can be inspected again on arrival.

If your flight is precleared, tell us. The car can wait at the FBO itself, and the walk to the car is minutes.

What this means for your chauffeur

Customs time is the one part of a private arrival nobody can promise to the minute. A quick clearance can take 15 minutes. A busy evening, a full cabin or a baggage check can take longer.

We plan for it. We monitor the tail number, so we know when the aircraft lands. We confirm the customs location and the exit point with the operator or FBO before arrival. The chauffeur stages there and waits through processing, so your passenger never waits for the car.

What to send for an international arrival

If you are booking for a principal or guest, send:

  1. Tail number and departure airport

  2. Scheduled arrival time in New York local time

  3. Customs location, if the operator has confirmed it (Jet Aviation, Hangar 1 or Signature East)

  4. The FBO the aircraft goes to afterward

  5. Whether the flight is precleared

  6. Passenger count and luggage

  7. An on-the-day contact, plus any confidentiality or security requirements
